Performance
Published on June 20, 2007 By Rvanbel In Object Desktop
I just recently installed object desktop and I had a question regarding startup performance. My system is an AMD athlon 64 3200, 2 gb ram, 3 hard drives and I'm running XP pro. I also have Norton Anti-Virus installed. From what I have heard norton is a performance hog and during bootup it seems to take an excessive amount of time to complete the startup. I have configured the system by using msconfig, but with very little results. Would you have any advice on a startup configuration. Should I go with a different anti-virus software. Anything would be a great help. I was also curious to find out if I can make any changes to the bios during startup. Does the system have to scan through all 3 drives on startup. My os is on C along with the anti-virus, and the firewall. Thanks

Absolutely get rid of Norton. Not only does it slow the bootup process, it has so many processes running and uses a lot of ram, there are way better options out there. I switched to AVG Pro earlier this year, never looked back.

what is AVG exactly? I have heard that either Zone Alarm or McAfee are better anti-virus programs

Well, You will read very different recommendations here. I switched to NOD32 on different machines some while ago and didn't regret it at all.

AVG is a virus scanner.  A very good one.
Zone alarm is a firewall.  You should always run a firewall.
McAfee  . . well it does lots of things.  I think it tryies to do too much and is invasive to a system.

AVG + Zone Alarm + Windows defender (spyware detection and removal) is what I use and I don't have any problems.

Zone Alarm is a firewall, but they also have an anti-virus program. I also have adaware and spybot on my system, so I am just looking for a non-invasive or memory hog anti-virus program. McAfee is supposedly a lot less invasive then Norton. I am almost positive that its norton thats slowing my system down.
